Dual credit is a program that allows high school students to enroll in college-level courses and earn credit that can be applied towards both their high school diploma and college degree. Through dual credit programs, students can take college courses while still in high school and receive both high school and college credit for the same class. This program allows students to get a head start on their college education and save time and money on their degree. Additionally, it can help students to be better prepared for the rigor of college courses by giving them a taste of what to expect before they graduate high school.
Each high school in the MACS EFE region offers students early college credit in the form of dual credit taught in the high schools and dual enrollment taught at the campuses of Moraine Valley Community College. Dual Credit courses are initially vetted by the college for content, skills, and rigor as well as faculty qualifications. Each subsequent fall, high school and college faculty meet to discuss each program and revisit every dual credit agreement to verify program quality. This involves reviewing syllabi, textbooks, assignments, and assessments to ensure that they align with college-level expectations. Following these collaborative advisory meetings, dual credit agreements are reaffirmed and approved for the new school year. These regular meetings provide an opportunity for faculty to discuss any issues or challenges that have arisen during the implementation of the program and to identify opportunities for improvement or expansion. Additionally, business advisories take place once or twice per year for each approved program.
Open communication and collaboration between high school and college faculty ensures a successful dual credit program that benefits participating students.
